Numerical study of agitation due to waves in Port-Cartier's harbour

Customer's name: Procéan Inc.'s contract on behalf of Cartier Mines of Port-Cartier.

Summary:

A series of digital models were used to predict wave conditions at sea and at the entry of Port-Cartier's harbour from wind observations carried out in Mont-Joli over a 30 year period. Another type of model allowed us to analyze agitation due to waves inside the harbour enclosure. Several structural modification scenarios were analyzed to improve protection of ships when they enter the port.

Principal activities carried out:

• Selection of the most representative wind data of winds at sea;
• Wind statistical analysis;
• Statistical analysis of waves at sea;
• Radial and effective fetch calculations according to all directions at sea;
• Construction of a calculation meshing for wave transformation from sea towards the coast;
• Digital wave transformation simulations from sea towards the coast;
• Construction of a calculation meshing for numerical modeling of agitation due to waves within the port;
• Determination of reflexion coefficients within the port according to the harbour's installation plans;
• Simulation of agitation due to waves within the port;
• Realization of scenarios corresponding to the diagrams of various installations;
• Analysis of the results and installation suggestions.
